Nanotechnology, the engineering of materials at dimensions below 100 nm, presents transformative opportunities for sustainable environmental management and renewable energy systems. At the nanoscale, materials exhibit unique physical and chemical properties that can dramatically improve energy generation, storage, and environmental remediation. In renewable energy, nanostructured materials enhance the efficiency of solar cells, hydrogen production and storage, and energy storage devices by increasing surface area, conductivity, and catalytic activity. Meanwhile, nanotechnology-driven environmental solutions — such as nano-enabled filtration and remediation systems — enable safer and more efficient pollutant removal. This article reviews recent advances in nanotechnology applications in environmental sustainability and renewable energy, discusses underlying mechanisms, addresses challenges in scalability and safety, and outlines future research directions.
